Hemorrhoids are a condition that can cause pain and impact daily life. While they may resolve on their own or with home remedies, persistent or severe cases might require medical attention. Understanding when to seek professional advice helps manage symptoms and explore treatment options.

What Are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swollen blood vessels in the rectal or anal area. These blood vessels can become irritated or inflamed, leading to pain. Hemorrhoids are classified into two categories based on their location. Internal hemorrhoids develop within the rectum and are generally not visible, while external hemorrhoids form under the skin around the anus and are often more noticeable.

What Causes Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are caused by increased pressure in the lower rectum, which can strain the blood vessels. This pressure may result from various factors, including chronic constipation, excessive straining during bowel movements, or prolonged sitting, particularly on the toilet. Pregnancy is another common factor, as the added pressure in the pelvic area increases the likelihood of developing hemorrhoids. A lack of dietary fiber and insufficient hydration may exacerbate the problem by leading to harder stools.

What Are the Symptoms?

Symptoms can vary depending on the type and severity of hemorrhoids. Common symptoms include itching, pain, and swelling around the anus. For internal hemorrhoids, rectal bleeding during bowel movements is a typical sign, often seen as bright red blood on toilet paper.

External hemorrhoids may cause pain or tenderness around the anal area, particularly when sitting. Hard lumps near the anus could indicate a thrombosed hemorrhoid, which occurs when blood pools and forms a clot. This condition is often more painful and may require medical attention.

When Should You Seek Medical Help?

While mild hemorrhoids may improve with over-the-counter treatments or lifestyle changes, persistent or severe symptoms might require professional evaluation. You should think about seeking medical help if rectal bleeding occurs regularly or is accompanied by significant pain. Consistent bleeding can also indicate other conditions, such as colorectal polyps or cancer, which require a proper diagnosis.

Medical attention is also advised if home remedies fail to improve symptoms after a week or two. Persistent swelling, significant pain, or the presence of a thrombosed hemorrhoid are additional reasons to consult a healthcare provider. Addressing these symptoms early may aid effective treatment and prevent complications.

What Are the Available Treatment Options?

Several treatment options are available depending on the severity of the condition. A healthcare provider will evaluate symptoms and recommend the most appropriate course of action.

  • Rubber Band Ligation: This non-surgical procedure involves placing a small rubber band around the base of an internal hemorrhoid. The band cuts off blood supply, causing the hemorrhoid to shrink and eventually fall off.
  • Infrared Coagulation (IRC): Infrared coagulation is another minimally invasive option for internal hemorrhoids. This treatment uses heat from infrared light to coagulate blood flow to the affected veins, leading to shrinkage over time.
  • Hemorrhoidectomy: For severe cases, surgical removal of hemorrhoids, known as a hemorrhoidectomy, may be necessary. This procedure is typically reserved for large or prolapsed hemorrhoids that do not respond to other treatments.

See a Healthcare Provider Today

Persistent hemorrhoids can cause pain and affect your daily life, but effective medical treatments are available. If symptoms such as significant pain, regular bleeding, or prolonged swelling persist despite home remedies, seeking professional advice is beneficial. Early intervention may provide relief, prevent complications, and improve quality of life. Schedule a consultation with a healthcare provider to explore solutions tailored to your needs and take the first step toward feeling better.
